John Edwards’ angry wife was terrified that she would die without a man by her side — and pretended he wasn’t having an affair so she could hang on to her illusion of a strong family, a close friend testified today.
In heartbreaking testimony, former campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri said that Elizabeth Edwards confessed to her in her final days that her separation from the cheating politician would leave her to face death alone.

“She expressed to me concern that when she and John separated, she was concerned that when she died there would not be a man around her who loved her,” said a teary-eyed Palmieri. who had grown to be a close friend of the ex-senator’s wife.
