Years later, at the urging of Walker and his agent, Jerry Kushnick, Leno reluctantly hired the comic as a staff writer for “The Tonight Show” — but refused to use any of his jokes on the air.
When Kushnick passed away, Crantz was fired. He returned home to Pittsburgh, where he died three years later.
“I look at it as a suicide,” Walker says. “You knew what that was about.”
